Set your phone on a charging pad for half an hour and watch it jump from 0% to 50% battery — that's the real-world difference Qi2 25W delivers, and why it's often called "Qi2.2." When the spec was officially announced last summer, iPhone and some Android phones were already on the support list, but Google lagged a step behind. Only with the recently unveiled Pixel 11 series did Qi2 25W finally make it onto the spec sheet, letting the Android camp catch up at last.
The core difference comes down to the power number. The old Qi2 topped out at 15W, and charging speed depended on the device — going from 0% to 50% typically took about 50 to 80 minutes. Qi2 25W raises the ceiling to 25W, cutting that same 0-to-50% charge down to roughly 30 minutes. Wireless charging has long been seen as less efficient than wired, and this speed boost goes a long way toward closing that gap.
Beyond raw power, Qi2 25W also beefs up thermal protection. Phones heating up on wireless charging pads is a common complaint, and the new spec addresses this directly. Even if users can't feel the difference in temperature, the lower peak heat during charging should, in theory, help extend battery lifespan.
For consumers, the key thing to check is simple: does your phone or charging pad explicitly list Qi2 25W support? If it only supports the older Qi2 standard, both charging speed and thermal performance will stay capped at the 15W level.
