"The devs didn't skip town, did they?" That joke has been the go-to line among Fading Afterglow of Ziggurat fans for the past two years. This action RPG from Chinese studio NEKCOM Games blew up globally on the strength of a single trailer imagining a world where Japan's bubble economy never burst — and instead went on to buy up most of America. What followed was a long stretch of silence. Back in 2025, producer Luo Xiangyu personally stepped up to explain that the team was pouring all its energy into development and wanted to wait until things were truly ready before showing their faces again. Now, that "ready" moment finally has a date.

NEKCOM Games recently announced that Fading Afterglow of Ziggurat will be showcased at gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany, running from August 26 to 30 local time, with a booth located in Hall 6, A-30. This isn't just a booth appearance for show — the team has confirmed the game will offer hands-on demos to the public for the first time, and has released a "Hands-On Demo Guide" video detailing that there will be 42 demo stations on-site, with each session lasting roughly 30 minutes. Four completely different gameplay segments will be available for players to choose from.

Four demo segments, laying all four cards on the table at once

The first segment is Chapter 3, Segment 1: "Story & Combat." Protagonist Chigusa Chocho, searching for her sister Aya, heads to Shinyokohama Mountain to find the all-knowing Granny Peace, only to discover a gang of thugs called the Warriors has already beaten her there. This segment follows a linear path, with the focus on story progression and the core combat system.
The second segment shifts to a completely different pace, set at Chocho's mobile home base — the massive RV Camp. Here, players can engage in daily activities to develop their character, explore the vehicle's interior, and tap into customization and growth systems, with the tempo noticeably slowing down.

The third segment is Chapter 3, Segment 2: "Exploration." Chocho arrives at the shopping street at the foot of Shinyokohama Mountain, which has been revived and bustling once again. To obtain a mountain pass, players are free to wander this "Showa America"-style district, interacting with NPCs, shops, and various facilities, or simply push straight toward the mission objective without detours.

The fourth segment is an all-out boss fight: the story has advanced to Chapter 4, where Chocho has been tracking the mysterious "Man in Black" all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge, culminating in a massive boss battle under the moonlight. Together, the four demo segments cover the main narrative, life-sim elements, open exploration, and a combat stress test — all laid bare for players in one go.

Can't fly to Germany? There's still a trailer to look forward to

For fans who can't make it to Cologne to line up for the demo in person, NEKCOM Games has confirmed that a brand-new trailer for Fading Afterglow of Ziggurat will premiere globally during gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. This year's Opening Night Live takes place on August 25 local time in Germany, which translates to 2 AM on August 26 in Taiwan time — marking the first time in ages that the game will officially drop major new footage.
NEKCOM Games has previously revealed some scope details about the game: the main storyline runs over 25 hours, with a huge amount of side quests and mini-games, more than 1,500 interactable NPCs, and a combat system featuring over a dozen weapon modules alongside hundreds of collectible weapons. The game isn't meant to be a simple "zombie musou" title, but rather a story-driven RPG. Fading Afterglow of Ziggurat is currently slated to launch on PS5 and PC in 2026, with an exact release date still to be announced.
