Smart #2 Debuts at Paris Motor Show: After a String of SUVs, the Brand Remembers Who It Used to Be

Smart unveiled its ultra-compact electric car, the #2, at the Paris Motor Show, offering roughly 290 km of range on a single charge and starting under £20,000 — though the tiny car likely won't be making its way to the US market.

The moment the Smart #2 took the stage at the Paris Motor Show, it felt like turning back the clock to the days when the Fortwo ruled the streets. Four years after the debut of the Smart #1, the brand has rolled out nothing but SUVs — until now. The #2 marks a return to the dimensions that first made Smart memorable: a two-seater, short-wheelbase size built for squeezing through narrow alleys and tight parking spots.

At the rear sits a 60kW electric motor delivering 130Nm of torque to the rear wheels, which are larger than the front wheels — a setup the automaker says improves driving stability. The battery uses a floor-mounted layout, delivering a range of up to 180 miles (about 290 km) on a single charge — a solid figure for an ultra-compact EV. Fast charging takes the battery from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. The suspension features a five-link rear setup, which Smart says delivers sportier handling along with greater comfort.

The body carries on the two-tone paint language, echoing the classic color-blocking logic of the original Fortwo, but the interior is thoroughly modern: a 10.1-inch central touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, plus driver assistance systems.

Four Trims, Including a Gold Edition Limited to 999 Units

The entry-level Pure trim includes all the base equipment mentioned above. The Pure+ builds on that with 11kW AC charging and heated seats. Moving up, the Premium adds a glass roof, heated leather seats, and a seven-speaker Sennheiser sound system, along with a wider choice of exterior colors. The top-spec Couture Edition takes a different approach altogether: a white body paired with a gold-painted roof and gold-trimmed wheels, limited to just 999 units worldwide.

Exact pricing and launch timing have yet to be announced, but Smart says the starting price will be under $26,500 — roughly equivalent to £20,000. Pre-orders are expected to open next spring, with deliveries following in summer.

Don't expect to see this car on American streets anytime soon — Smart hasn't sold any models in the US since 2019, and small, budget-friendly EVs have historically struggled to gain traction in that market.

The outer screen of a foldable phone can safely take a screen protector, but the inner screen already comes with a factory-applied TPU protective film—peeling it off yourself risks damaging the display. Both Samsung and Apple recommend taking any issues to an authorized repair center instead of DIY fixes.
