The iPhone 17 lineup does support Wi-Fi 7, but since it doesn't support 320MHz channel width, there's actually no theoretical speed difference whether it's connected to a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 router. The Sony PlayStation 5 Pro also has Wi-Fi 7 built in, but users on Reddit have reported no noticeable improvement in download speeds. Both examples point to the same lesson: just because a spec sheet lists support for a new standard doesn't mean users will actually feel the difference.
Since the Wi-Fi Alliance officially rolled out the Wi-Fi 7 standard in early 2024, more devices and routers supporting it have hit the market. It's backward compatible, so that old printer you picked up secondhand will still connect to a new router just fine — no need to replace everything at once, though those older devices won't be able to tap into Wi-Fi 7's new features.
Wi-Fi 7's core selling point is Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets a router send and receive data simultaneously across the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands. Combined with 320MHz channel width — double that of Wi-Fi 6E — plus 4K-QAM modulation, a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router can theoretically hit up to 46Gbps, five times faster than Wi-Fi 6E. Actual performance depends on your internet plan and how many high-demand devices are connected at once. CNET's testing found Wi-Fi 7 routers maintain stable signal even at longer range, with tri-band models clearly outperforming dual-band ones; however, RTINGS' testing also noted that how these features are actually implemented varies significantly from model to model.
