Tuck Jeans into Boots or Let Them Drape? A Menswear Guide to Hems, Shafts and Toes

Tuck Jeans into Boots or Let Them Drape? A Menswear Guide to Hems, Shafts and Toes

Pairing jeans and boots in autumn often raises a question of where the hem should land rather than what color to wear. Covering the shaft creates a continuous leg line; tucking exposes the boot’s material, laces and height. Looks from Jo Woo-chan, Lee Jong-won, pH-1 and TXT’s Yeonjun offer different examples, but the starting point remains your trouser width, lengths and boot space, rather than copying a single gesture.

For a Continuous Line, Let the Hem Fall Naturally Over the Boot

ALLDAY PROJECT’s Jo Woo-chan pairs slim black jeans with black Chelsea boots, connecting trousers and shoes through color. The key is to avoid excessive folds where the hem covers the foot. A portion of the toe can remain visible while standing and appear more as you walk, preserving the boot’s presence. Fabric caught on the shaft, however, can abruptly interrupt the silhouette.

Actor Lee Jong-won’s straight jeans and sleek ankle boots contrast lighter denim with a black toe. The trousers need not cling to the calf: sufficient width to pass over the shaft and a length clear of the ground create a more relaxed effect than skinny jeans. A heel or thicker sole can also sit beneath long straight trousers, but enough hem width remains essential. Fabric trapped at the opening makes the shoes look detached from the outfit.

To Show the Boots, First Organize the Extra Fabric

pH-1’s wide trousers and Timberland work boots bring the shoe’s thickness, laces and workwear character into the silhouette. The useful lesson is the relationship between volumes. Substantial soles and shafts require trousers with enough room to meet them. If tucking, distribute the fabric rather than bunching every fold at the front of the ankle.

TXT’s Yeonjun gathers his trouser hems inside Miu Miu ankle boots, using the laces to define the closure. Slim straight trousers are usually easier to tuck. With semi-wide trousers, first arrange and lightly fold the hem, secure it with a sock, then put on a boot with sufficient shaft room. This changes where fabric lands; tighter is not inherently better. Sitting, bending and walking should remain comfortable, while thick bunches of fabric can make the styling look forced.

Look Back at the Top, Not Only at the Ankle

Once the hem and shaft are focal points, a simpler block of color above can balance the look. A relaxed knit, shirt or belted coat adjusts the relationship between upper and lower volumes. Begin with matching trouser and boot colors for continuity; distinguish fabric from leather to emphasize the shoe. A belt may echo the leather color without requiring every accessory to match exactly.

Check three angles when trying the combination: from the front, look for bunching; from the side, see whether fabric clears the shaft; after walking, check whether the hem rides up or drags. Celebrity photographs are observation points, not formulas for a fixed body type. The same boot may need a different arrangement with a different trouser width. Organizing the junction between trousers and boots often clarifies autumn menswear more effectively than another accessory.
