'Spring Awakening' Composer Duncan Sheik Dies at 56

Next Friday, September 25, Duncan Sheik was supposed to be in a rehearsal room at the Off-Broadway venue The Night Egg at the Culture Club, still fine-tuning his new musical "Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen." Previews for the show had already been scheduled, and a revival of "Spring Awakening" was also set to hit Off-Broadway in the coming months. All of those plans now stand frozen in the wake of his sudden passing.

Sheik died Thursday evening (September 17) local time at a Manhattan hospital from organ failure, at age 56. Earlier in the week, his family had released a statement saying he was "receiving medical care" and in "critical but stable" condition. On Friday, September 18, the family posted again to confirm his death: "The world has lost a singular talent, a voice whose impact on music and theater ran deep. From the Grammy-nominated hit 'Barely Breathing' to the groundbreaking, Tony- and Grammy-winning 'Spring Awakening,' Duncan's artistry touched countless people and left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape." The statement also noted that Sheik was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend, and thanked everyone for the outpouring of care and love.

Sheik won two Tony Awards for "Spring Awakening" — Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations — and the show also took home the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. He co-wrote the score with Steven Sater, and the show's original 1996 Broadway cast included Jonathan Groff, John Gallagher Jr., and Lea Michele.

Michele paid tribute on her Instagram Story, writing: "I met Duncan when I was 14, listening to a cassette tape of him singing demos from 'Spring Awakening' outside my middle school before my very first audition." She continued: "I don't know what to say. This hurts, and it doesn't feel real. Thank you for everything you gave us, and for the time we shared. All my love and prayers to Nora, Ines, and Duncan's family." She also shared a clip of herself and Sheik singing "Mama Who Bore Me" together in a rehearsal space, with him playing guitar.

Singer-DJ Bright Light Bright Light also shared a tribute on social media: "As a teenager I imported all his albums to my house in Wales, dreaming of becoming a songwriter living in New York, just like him. Years later I actually did it — I'll always be grateful to him for inspiring all of that." "Orange Is the New Black" actress Kimiko Glenn, who appeared in the "Spring Awakening" national tour, wrote: "The world deserved several more decades of your music." "Scream" actress Melissa Barrera recalled that Sheik personally flew to Mexico City to see the show's opening night there, telling the cast that their rendition of "Purple Summer" was the most beautiful version he'd ever heard.

Beyond his theater work, Sheik also released several solo albums, including his self-titled 1996 debut (featuring "Barely Breathing") and his most recent record, 2022's "Claptrap." He is survived by his partner, Nora Ariffin, and their daughter, Ines.
