House of the Dragon Season 4 Confirmed as Series Finale — HBO Boss Says the Ending Was Written All Along
Following the Season 3 finale, HBO has confirmed that House of the Dragon will conclude with its fourth season. CEO Casey Bloys made clear this isn't a last-minute cancellation — the endpoint was mapped out from day one.
House of the Dragon's Season 3 finale left us with Matt Smith's Daemon standing amid the wreckage of a dynastic civil war. HBO has now confirmed that this prequel series, based on George R.R. Martin's novel Fire & Blood, will wrap up officially with Season 4 — and this isn't some sudden decision. It was the plan from the very start.
When asked by Deadline whether Season 4 would be the final season, HBO CEO Casey Bloys didn't mince words: "Yeah, that was always the plan. The goal of the show was to follow the Targaryen history, and if you've read the books, you know what happens to that family. So there's a natural end point to that Targaryen history."
House of the Dragon is set roughly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, chronicling the Dance of the Dragons — the Targaryen family's civil war over succession to the throne. Season 4 was greenlit in November 2025, with the core cast — Emma D'Arcy, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Paddy Considine, Steve Toussaint, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, and Tom Glynn-Carney — expected to return, alongside Season 3 additions James Norton and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who are also expected to reprise their roles.
As for release timing, Season 4 is expected to arrive in 2028, though an exact date hasn't been announced. Looking back at the first three seasons, all premiered in either June or August — if that pattern holds, the final season will likely land sometime in summer 2028.
The first three seasons are currently available to stream on HBO Max in the UK. Release plans and exact availability for other regions have yet to be announced officially.
