ACORN’s Shinpei Kawata launches Independent Leather Shop with a moose-leather D-pocket jacket
The debut D-POCKET LEATHER JACKET arrives at BIOTOP TOKYO from October 31 to November 8. Finnish moose leather and Italian hardware define the ¥418,000 design.
Independent Leather Shop begins with a practical question: how can an archival leather jacket become something people reach for every day? Founded by Shinpei Kawata of vintage store ACORN Buy&Sell Vintage, the new label looks to 1930s motorcycle clothing for its debut D-POCKET LEATHER JACKET. It will be sold at BIOTOP TOKYO from October 31 to November 8, 2026. An asymmetric front and D-shaped pocket remain central, now in Finnish moose leather. Offered only in black, it costs ¥418,000 including tax.
Broad lapels frame the asymmetric front opening.
An archival starting point, with a revised shape
The reference is an archival jacket made in Ventura, California, during the 1930s by a historical label also named Independent Leather Shop. The new brand draws on that garment’s design language; it does not claim that the original company has operated continuously. Kawata, who has spent years working with vintage clothing, considers motorcycle jackets from that period exceptionally beautiful. Their weight, stiffness and awkwardness, however, often kept them out of his own everyday rotation. That contradiction prompted the project.
The photographs show broad lapels, an off-centre zipper and a lower flap pocket, without relying on a mass of decoration to suggest age. The D-pocket’s curve interacts with the diagonal lapel and front opening, concentrating attention around the torso. The back is quieter, defined by panel seams and the waist structure. According to the brand, both the silhouette and construction have been reconsidered for contemporary bodies, rather than reproducing an archive sample millimetre for millimetre.

Soft leather against bright hardware
The main material is naturally finished Finnish moose leather, selected by the brand for its softness, lightness and natural shading. Those descriptions explain the material choice and design intention; they are not a wear test or a promise about every wearer’s experience. The announcement gives no finished jacket weight. Close-ups retain the leather’s fine grain and creases, allowing the broad lapels to reflect light in layers rather than appearing as one perfectly smooth black surface.

Silver-coloured zippers from Italian manufacturer RACCAGNI add a harder gleam. Here, silver describes the appearance, not a guarantee of solid-silver construction. The hardware’s brightness separates it from the leather’s softer reflections. For someone interested in motorcycle jackets without an entirely period-styled wardrobe, that contrast offers identifiable detail alongside simple tops and trousers, while keeping the jacket itself as the visual centre.
Where and when to find it in Tokyo
The debut venue is BIOTOP TOKYO at 4-6-44 Shirokanedai, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Announced opening hours are 11am to 8pm local time. Sizes are M (38), L (40) and XL (42), all in black. The ¥418,000 price includes Japanese tax; it is not a Taiwan-dollar quotation. When this information was compiled on October 25, the sales period had yet to begin, so a particular size or immediate in-store purchase should not be assumed.
Anyone planning a Tokyo visit can check BIOTOP’s debut sales announcement. For a jacket at this price, its vintage lineage is only part of the decision: shoulder placement, sleeve movement and the feel of the hide must also suit the wearer. Official photographs explain the form, while personal fit still requires an individual assessment. That distinction fits the label’s ambition to turn an archive reference into contemporary clothing.
