Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Beige: red gold and beige leave room for reading time

Laurent Ferrier’s Classic Origin Beige brings warm colours to a watch displaying only hours, minutes and small seconds. Reference LCF036.R5.BR5 introduces 5N red gold to the Classic Origin case for the first time, paired with a beige opaline dial and mocha strap. Recent Hong Kong coverage focuses on its restrained appearance, but the official specifications reveal a complete set of choices connecting material, legibility and a hand-wound movement.

How does a beige dial avoid looking flat?

A brown minute track and red numerals create small colour distinctions, while the small-seconds display at six concentrates movement in the lower half. Four drop-shaped markers, assegai-shaped hour and minute hands and a baton seconds hand are made in red gold. They take up relatively little space, using outline and reflection to vary the reading. Within a single beige palette, the open centre, outer track and seconds dial develop separate rhythms.

Assegai-shaped hands, small seconds and a railway-style track create layers of legibility.

One useful way to appreciate the layout is to follow the route taken when reading time: locate the long hands, read the outer scale and then notice the seconds moving. Without a date window, no rectangular opening abruptly breaks the ground colour. In exchange, the wearer gives up reading the date at a glance. Minimalism is a decision about which information deserves to remain visible, rather than a competition to remove the most functions.

How do the red-gold case and hand-wound movement work together?

Current official specifications list a 40mm diameter, 11.10mm thickness, an 18K 5N red-gold case and 30m water resistance. The hand-sewn mocha nubuck strap has an Alcantara lining and a matching gold pin buckle. Warm metal and matte leather temper one another’s shine, making a continuous palette with beige, taupe and brown clothing.

The exhibition back reveals the hand-wound LF116.01: 150 components, a 3Hz frequency and an 80-hour power reserve. No automatic rotor obscures the view, making the arrangement of bridges, screws and wheels easier to observe. Dark ruthenium treatment contrasts with polished edges, giving the movement a different visual language from the soft front. Hand winding also makes replenishing power an action in which the owner regularly participates.

What else matters when choosing fewer functions?

Laurent Ferrier highlights its long-blade ratchet system and winding feel, along with details such as a Breguet overcoil. For mechanical-watch enthusiasts, the attraction extends beyond running time to the daily interaction between crown and movement. Someone accustomed to simply picking up a watch and wearing it may prefer the different rhythm offered by automatic winding or another power source. Component count alone cannot rank these ways of living with a watch.

The official page currently lists CHF48,000, which should be distinguished from Hong Kong retail quotations, tax and availability. Classic Origin Beige is interesting because elaborate craft remains in the details: restrained colour at the front, clearly visible finishing at the back, and metal, leather and winding forming an object for regular use. For those drawn to discreet watches, that can offer more character than a conspicuous new emblem.
