A24 Crosses the SCP Community's Red Line, Neon Steps In with Open-License Promise for Horror Anthology

A24 sparked controversy after announcing an SCP Foundation adaptation without community consent. Neon, the studio behind "Parasite" and "Anora," has since stepped in with plans for a similar project, promising to follow CC BY-SA licensing for a horror anthology film set for 2027.

A24 Crosses the SCP Community's Red Line, Neon Steps In with Open-License Promise for Horror Anthology

A concrete statue that only moves when no one's looking—this is one of the SCP Foundation's most iconic creations, SCP-173. Built by an online community back in 2008 as a database of horror stories, the SCP Foundation has now become a fresh source of material for Hollywood, with two studios delivering starkly different results when it comes to handling licensing.

When A24 earlier announced a V/H/S series horror film based on the SCP Foundation, it did so without first reaching out to the SCP Wiki's administrative team, and without committing to release the work under the community-mandated CC BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike) license. The move triggered backlash from the community, prompting the SCP Wiki team to issue a warning that the licensing restrictions couldn't simply be bypassed.

Watching A24's controversy unfold, Neon—the studio behind "Parasite" and "Anora"—chose a different path. The company likewise announced plans to adapt SCP Foundation stories into a horror anthology film, but before making any moves, it reached out to the SCP Wiki's administrative team and committed to releasing the work under the community-required CC BY-SA license. The film is slated for theatrical release in 2027.

Neon's film will feature up-and-coming directors and showcase work from the SCP Foundation's creator community, but it won't be an "official" SCP movie—SCP Wiki staff won't be involved in production, creators won't be compensated, and the SCP Foundation itself won't endorse the film, since doing so would violate the community's own established rules.

In a statement, the SCP Wiki administrative team wrote: "The staff of the SCP Foundation Wiki, and our community, thank Neon for their excellent communication and their commitment to honoring the licensing requirements and the core collaborative spirit of the SCP Foundation project." In a separate post, the team laid out their concerns regarding A24's proposal, stating they were "happy to sit down with A24, Spooky Pictures, and other relevant parties to discuss how this film could be made and distributed in compliance with CC BY-SA."

The SCP Foundation's premise centers on a secret organization that studies dangerous supernatural objects to protect humanity, with each object assigned its own number and file. Beyond SCP-173, familiar figures in the community include SCP-096, "the Shy Guy"—an eerie humanoid creature that turns violent if its face is seen—and SCP-3008, an infinite space that bears an uncanny resemblance to an IKEA store, complete with equally aggressive employees.
