Bass Reeves Goes Steampunk in Netflix's 'Bass X Machina,' First Trailer Drops

A once-enslaved man who became a legendary U.S. Marshal in the American West, dropped into a wasteland crawling with steam-powered mechs and cybernetic contraptions—that's the first image Netflix's newly released animated trailer for "Bass X Machina" delivers. Frontier history and mechanized warfare collide, and these two vocabularies that should clash instead mesh surprisingly well over the trailer's 78 seconds.

The series is helmed by Studio Mir, the animation studio behind "Devil May Cry," "The Legend of Korra," and "Voltron: Legendary Defender," known for giving action sequences real weight and impact. Emmy-nominated actor Brian Tyree Henry voices the titular Bass Reeves, set in an alternate-history post-Civil War American frontier, where Reeves works as a Deputy U.S. Marshal keeping order in a lawless border region overrun by outlaw gangs, steam-powered mechs, and cybernetic augmentation technology.

The trailer offers plenty of concrete imagery: revolver showdowns, a train heist sequence, and massive mech battles playing out in a snow-covered frontier town. Classic Western iconography—stagecoaches, saloons, marshal badges—gets woven into steampunk mechanical structures, paired with industrial-tinged sound design, giving the whole thing a grittier edge than a straightforward retro Western.

Netflix has confirmed "Bass X Machina" will launch globally on November 3, 2026.
