Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger Officially Named Skydance, Ellison Announces Personally

For a merger worth a staggering $110 billion, the companies ultimately skipped the obvious mashup name "Paramount Warner" in favor of something more personal: Skydance, the company David Ellison built from the ground up himself. The decision was announced by Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison on his brand-new X account — and it was the very first post he ever made there. He wrote: "What was once the peak is now just the beginning."

The Paramount-Warner Bros. merger cleared its biggest regulatory hurdle back in September, and the deal is expected to officially close this month. Once finalized, these two century-old studios will be united under one roof for the first time ever, bringing HBO Max and Paramount+ together under the same company. The rights to the Harry Potter franchise, the DC characters, and Game of Thrones will all now fall under the newly formed Skydance. The name itself isn't a new invention — it's the original name of the company Ellison founded back in 2006.

In his post, Ellison explained the thinking behind the name. He said both studios have their own distinct identities and generations of brand loyalty built up over the years, and the goal was never to create a new corporate identity that would dilute, change, or overshadow either one. Instead, he wants Skydance to give the combined company its own identity while letting Paramount and Warner Bros. — along with all their respective brands — stay in the spotlight, rather than being replaced by the new name.

That said, there's another side to this deal involving concerns over news independence. Both CNN and CBS News will be folded into the Skydance umbrella, and even though the antitrust lawsuit was settled last month — clearing the final obstacle to the merger — worries about editorial independence at these two news outlets haven't fully gone away. According to CNN, Paramount has agreed to establish an independent editorial oversight committee to monitor operations at both CNN and CBS News. The report also noted that the studio side has committed to releasing 30 theatrical films per year going forward.
