Toyota GR86 New Model Year Gets NT$40K Price Hike, Same Power Output, Now Standard with Active Safety

Hotai Motor has released details on the new model year GR86 on its official website. The 234 horsepower and 25.5 kg-m of torque remain unchanged, but the entire lineup now comes standard with EyeSight 4.0, while prices have risen by NT$40,000, with the manual starting at NT$1.77 million.

The power figures haven't budged, but the price tag has climbed by NT$40,000. That's the most direct change to the new model year Toyota GR86: the 2.4-liter horizontally-opposed four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine still delivers 234 horsepower and 25.5 kg-m of torque, but in the new model year information quietly posted by Hotai Motor on its official website, the upgrade focus has shifted entirely to active safety and equipment refinement — not the core power performance of this rear-wheel-drive sports car.

The biggest highlight of this model year update is that EyeSight 4.0 driver assistance system is now standard across the entire lineup. For a sports car that has long marketed itself on "purity," this is a relatively unusual direction for equipment enhancement. The new car still offers a choice between 6MT and 6AT transmissions, with prices across the board rising by NT$40,000 compared to the current model — the manual now costs NT$1.77 million, while the automatic runs NT$1.78 million.

The equipment gap between the two transmission options has also widened. Beyond the Track, Sport, and Snow driving modes plus steering wheel paddle shifters, the automatic model gets its ACC adaptive cruise control upgraded to full-speed range, and adds features like PCTM (Pre-Collision Throttle Management) and PKSB (Parking Support Brake) — giving it a noticeably more complete safety tech package than the manual version.

On the exterior, a new Phantom Black color joins the lineup, and wheel designs differ by transmission: the 6MT gets 18-inch matte black alloy wheels, while the 6AT switches to 17-inch two-tone alloy wheels — one of the few visual differences you can spot between the two variants at a glance.

With prices now crossing the NT$1.7 million mark, the GR86's once relatively pure sports car positioning must also answer to consumer expectations for everyday convenience. The approach this time is clear: keep the power output as-is, and pour resources into active safety and equipment details — letting core traits like the 6MT, rear-wheel drive, and naturally aspirated engine live on, while filling in a previously weaker corner of the safety equipment map.
