The fact that a decade-old game is being offered as a free upgrade to players is arguably more noteworthy than the remaster content itself. CD Projekt Red dropped the news as the closing announcement of today's Gamescom Opening Night Live: "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" is getting a remaster, bundling in the base game plus both previously released DLC expansions. Starting September 29, players who already own the game can grab this upgrade for free—including those who bought the Switch version, who'll be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version at no extra cost.
Visual upgrades are the baseline for any remaster, but CDPR's overhaul this time goes well beyond graphics. The skill tree has been redesigned, and the combat system has been reworked too—covering camera movement, target-lock feel, and newly added execution moves. Geralt's movement and traversal should feel smoother, and mount handling has also been adjusted—though longtime fans might end up missing some of Roach's old janky, awkward moments if this pass ends up smoothing out all those little quirks.
Earlier this year, CDPR already confirmed that "The Witcher 3" will get a third DLC, "Songs of the Past," next year, and following the remaster announcement at this Gamescom, a short gameplay teaser was also released. Adding a brand-new story expansion to a title that's over a decade old isn't exactly common practice. As for a proper sequel in the series, fans will have to wait until at least 2028, while the modernized remake of the original "The Witcher" is also still in the works.
