Going from 10 metro areas to nearly 500 towns isn't incremental growth—it's Amazon pushing Prime Air drone delivery to six times its current scale. Right now, Prime Air operates across 10 U.S. metro areas through 11 operational sites, each covering 175 square miles, spanning Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Omaha (Nebraska), Baton Rouge (Louisiana), Detroit, Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas and Waco in Texas.
Next up are Chicago and Atlanta, both significantly larger metro areas, along with Syracuse (New York), Cleveland (Ohio), and Boise (Idaho). Amazon says it will continue rolling out new locations later this year, with the ultimate goal of reaching nearly 500 towns and cities by year's end.
There are clear limits on what can be dropped off at your doorstep by drone: items under five pounds that fit within the size of a large shoebox. Amazon says most orders arrive within 60 minutes, with some getting delivered in as little as 30.
The pricing structure comes in three tiers. Prime members get free drone delivery on orders over $50; orders below that threshold carry a $3 service fee. Non-Prime members needing something delivered fast—say, an emergency phone replacement—pay $5.
What matters here isn't just adding a couple more cities to the list—it's Amazon pushing drone delivery, once confined to mid-sized metro areas, into densely populated, logistically complex regions like Chicago and Atlanta for the first time. The exact coverage areas and site-specific operational details are still pending further announcement from Amazon.
