Apple's New CEO John Ternus Makes His Debut, First-Ever Foldable iPhone Reportedly Coming

Apple is holding its "Surprise and shine" event on September 9, marking John Ternus's first time hosting the company's annual showcase since taking over from Tim Cook. The long-rumored first foldable iPhone may finally make its debut, with a price tag that could reach as high as $2,000.

Apple's New CEO John Ternus Makes His Debut, First-Ever Foldable iPhone Reportedly Coming

Tomorrow, John Ternus will take the stage for the first time as Apple's CEO at a launch event—and sitting front and center could be the answer Apple fans have been waiting years for: the first foldable iPhone. The handover has been remarkably low-key. Tim Cook only officially stepped into the role of executive chairman earlier this month, even though the leadership change was actually announced back in April. Now, the real moment of transition is quietly unfolding at a hardware event.

The event, called "Surprise and shine," is set for 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT on September 9 at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California. Viewers can watch via the Apple TV app, Apple's website, or its YouTube channel.

The rumored foldable has been the subject of speculation for a long time now, and analysts with insider knowledge of the industry say the device is confirmed to appear at this event, possibly under the name iPhone Ultra. Reports suggest it will feature a roughly 5.5-inch outer display, unfolding to reveal a 7.8-inch inner screen—just shy of the iPad Mini's 8.3-inch display, essentially folding a full-size handset into something approaching tablet dimensions. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman gave the device's hinge durability and tablet-like unfolded interface a favorable review, but pointed out one notable shortcoming: the camera lacks a telephoto lens. If the price really does land above $2,000 as rumored, that gap could give plenty of iPhone Pro users pause—especially those who've grown accustomed to the zoom flexibility that comes with multiple lenses.

Beyond the foldable, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are also expected to make an appearance at the same event. Gurman speculated in an earlier post that clues in the event's promotional artwork might hint at a new sky blue colorway for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. As for budget-conscious buyers, they'll have to wait a bit longer: the base iPhone 18 won't be showing up at this event. Multiple reports indicate Apple is splitting its device launches between this fall and next spring, with the second-generation iPhone Air and the iPhone 18e both not expected to debut until spring 2027.

Beyond phones, the annual Apple Watch refresh is also on the expected lineup, with rumors pointing to the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. As for the Apple Watch SE 3, which just got a major redesign last year, it likely won't see major changes this time around.

This event follows a busy summer for Apple, which recently launched the Mac mini and Mac Studio featuring the new M6 and M5 Ultra chips. Both AI-focused desktops are set to go on sale September 22.
