Sam Altman Biopic 'Artificial' Trailer Drops — Andrew Garfield Brings Eerie AI Dread

Directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Andrew Garfield, the OpenAI CEO biopic "Artificial" has released its first trailer ahead of a Christmas release, and the vibe feels more like horror than biography.

Sam Altman Biopic 'Artificial' Trailer Drops — Andrew Garfield Brings Eerie AI Dread

Something feels off from the very first note of the trailer's score. Under a deeply unsettling soundtrack, Andrew Garfield delivers his Sam Altman impression in a deliberately stiff, almost robotic tone, rattling off AI's supposed benefits while calling it a "Pandora's box," dropping lines like "nations will collapse" and "industries are about to fall." This is not how your typical biopic opens.

The film, titled "Artificial," is directed by Luca Guadagnino — the filmmaker behind "Call Me by Your Name," "Challengers," and the "Suspiria" remake — with Garfield playing OpenAI CEO Altman. In the trailer, he walks through what looks like a bunker-like room stacked with weapons while declaring "the future is now inevitable"; later scenes show what appears to be a celebration of success, followed immediately by him screaming into the void. The whole thing plays out more like a thriller than anything resembling a traditional biopic.

The story draws from the infamous 2023 incident in which Altman was abruptly fired by OpenAI's board, only to be reinstated five days later. The film is set to hit theaters this Christmas, arriving just three years after the real-life events — a fairly quick turnaround for an adaptation. The cast also includes Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, and Mark Rylance.

Getting this film to the big screen wasn't smooth sailing. It was originally set to be distributed by Amazon MGM, but the studio dropped out of the project after pouring $50 billion into OpenAI, stating at the time that the film "would be better served by another distributor." Netflix, A24, and Focus Features also reportedly considered it before passing, and Neon ultimately picked up distribution rights, paving the way for this trailer to finally see the light of day.
