KEEN UNEEK Mule WK pairs woven black leather with a KEEN.CURVE platform
Released in limited quantities in Japan on 2 October, the backless loafer hybrid uses woven leather and officially weighs 295g per shoe in a 27cm size.
KEEN extends UNEEK Loafer WK into the open-backed UNEEK Mule WK. The black version launched in limited quantities in Japan on 2 October 2026 for ¥28,600 including tax. A penny-loafer strap, woven leather and an easy-entry mule outline meet the curved KEEN.CURVE platform. This is not a shoe debuting today, but a recent hybrid worth understanding through its construction and styling.

Removing the heel without losing the loafer vocabulary
Instead of a conventional closed panel, UNEEK Mule WK uses woven leather cords at the toe and connects them with a strap and perimeter reminiscent of a penny loafer. It looks more enclosed from the front and entirely open at the rear, changing its degree of formality depending on the angle. The important alteration concerns entry and silhouette, beyond a seasonal colour update.
Woven cords, the strap and footbed create contrasting surfaces in close-up.
The official description combines 2.5mm leather cords with a leather upper, hand-finished stitching and weaving, and leather from an LWG-certified tannery. That certification concerns the tannery; it does not mean the entire shoe has zero environmental impact or a guaranteed lifespan. Close photographs reveal the contrast between woven and smooth surfaces, giving the most concrete visual clue to its character.
KEEN.CURVE describes continuous curvature, not just thickness
The KEEN.CURVE sole uses continuous curvature intended by the brand to support the transition of a walking step. A compression-moulded EVA midsole sits below a PU footbed containing plant-derived material and a leather top sheet. Non-marking rubber forms the outsole. Contact with the foot, cushioning and ground contact are handled by different layers, so sole thickness alone cannot describe every function.
Directional tread patterns divide the rubber outsole’s contact areas.
The official 295g figure applies to one shoe in size 27cm and should not be generalized to all sizes. An open heel makes entry easier, but suitability for long walks and how securely the heel stays in place require a fitting based on individual feet and gait. A design intended for walking is not a comfort test for every wearer.
Black leather and an open heel leave styling choices visible
Black expresses the woven surface through sheen and shadow, while the brown footbed provides contrast from above. Trouser length determines how much of the open heel remains visible. Socks add another colour relationship between upper, footbed and leg. Those choices emerge from the construction without restricting the shoe to either holidays or formal dressing.
