Pompidou’s Massy site opens for previews ahead of spring 2027
Centre Pompidou Francilien combines conservation with public programmes across 30,000 square metres. Another free preview weekend takes place October 31–November 1.
Centre Pompidou Francilien – fabrique de l’art, the institution’s new site in Massy, France, is scheduled to open permanently in spring 2027. The approximately 30,000-square-metre facility combines conservation and restoration for the Musée national d’art moderne’s roughly 150,000-work collection with exhibitions, workshops and public cultural activity. This autumn’s Prélude! events are previews, not evidence that the entire facility has begun regular operation.
Following October 17–18 and alongside October 24–25, the next preview weekend is October 31–November 1. Admission is free, with booking strongly recommended by the institution. Visitors can follow an open route through architecture, selected collection works and activities. That does not mean unrestricted access to professional areas or that all 150,000 works are already installed. Gradual transfers and permanent opening follow a separate timetable.
Conservation and display need two architectural characters
PCA-STREAM and architect Philippe Chiambaretta give the building two characters. One side is more enclosed for storage and professional work; the other opens towards a park through timber walkways, stairs and terraces. Rather than merely wrapping a warehouse in an attractive façade, the design negotiates between protected conservation environments and public areas intended to be approachable.
Timber walkways and a diagonal stair connect public areas at different heights.A mid-level gallery faces the external walkway and park in this preview-stage image.
Official plans identify approximately 13,000 square metres of reserves, 4,000 of workshops, 3,000 of cultural and reception areas and 1,500 of terraces. These functions are not interchangeable. Paintings, moving images, design objects and large installations require different handling and circulation. Exhibitions are only the part visitors see; packing, condition assessment and restoration determine whether works can continue to be lent, researched and shown.
Read the museum’s interior and exterior through its walkways
Published photographs show substantial empty racking before collection transfers, revealing the scale of the storage environment. Timber walkways turn attention towards Parc de la Blanchette and its pond. A large diagonal stair connects an upper terrace, recalling the Paris building’s exposed circulation. This is a comparison of spatial relationships, not an assertion that the two buildings share one design or that every photograph shows a completed exhibition.

Future programming plans two collection-based exhibitions a year, accompanied by performances, conversations and education. The spring 2027 inaugural exhibition is titled 150 000! La fabrique du musée. Making museum work itself a subject also gives suburban audiences another route to the national collection. Actual programmes and accessible areas still depend on individual announcements; a plan is not a fixed year-round itinerary.
Separate preview visits from permanent opening
The site is in Massy, south of Paris, postcode 91300. Official pedestrian access is at 4 avenue du Noyer Lambert; vehicle access is directed to 6 avenue du Maréchal Koenig. Planned transport links should not be treated as services operating today. Check the official Pompidou Massy project and preview information for dates, booking and travel before choosing between this autumn’s previews and next spring’s permanent exhibitions.
