Gemini's Native App Lands on Windows, Alt + Space Summons Desktop Assistant

Google has launched a native Gemini app for Windows 10 and 11, summoned via keyboard shortcut just like the Mac version, with integration for Gmail, Google Drive, and image/video generation tools.

Gemini's Native App Lands on Windows, Alt + Space Summons Desktop Assistant

Alt + Space—that's the summoning command Google has set for Gemini on Windows. Just like the Mac version that launched earlier this year, hitting this shortcut brings up Gemini right on your desktop, no need to switch windows or open a separate browser tab.

Google officially released this native app for Windows 10 and 11 on September 10. This marks the second step in bringing Gemini to the desktop—the Mac version launched previously, and now the company has filled in Windows, the operating system with the largest market share. In a post on X, the official account wrote that pressing Alt + Space lets Gemini's assistance "show up right alongside the apps and tools you already use" on your desktop.

Functionally, this app doesn't stand alone—it's an entry point into Google's entire AI ecosystem. It can hand off tasks to the agentic Gemini Spark, and it connects directly to content in Gmail and Google Drive. Want to generate images or videos? Just call up Nano Banana and Gemini Omni. In other words, behind this desktop shortcut sits a whole suite of services, not just a chat window.

Google describes the app as "lightweight and quiet," emphasizing that it won't slow down your Windows PC, while hinting that more features are coming to the desktop version down the line. As for what those new capabilities will actually be or when they'll arrive, Google hasn't offered further details.

The app is now available for download. As for whether it can truly deliver on use cases Google has touted—like "quickly fact-checking a document" or "generating a few headline ideas for a presentation"—that ultimately comes down to users verifying the AI's answers for themselves.
